lean back and exercise

one of my favorite designers is Niels Diffrient from Humanscale. i’m a huge fan of his modern aesthetic and really appreciate his intuitive, innovative product design. a couple of his chair designs are shown here, both of which literally move with your back to strengthen and improve circulation. genius.

there are no levers to lock you into place, you control how and when your back moves. it’s an intelligent, truly ergonomic principle. it can take a little getting used to because you’re essentially having to change a few habits when you first sit in it (it took me about a week to adjust to the Freedom, less to adjust to my Liberty since the tension is overall a smidge looser), but i am completely converted and can’t rave enough about these chairs. i even purchased one for my mom!

when you lock the back angle of a chair, we often don’t think about the repercussions of that choice. what if the angle is not correct for your body? what if that angle is causing excessive pressure or tension on your back and legs? what if that is what’s causing your headaches?

and one last bit, the chairs are available in lots of great fabric options, have a lifetime warranty on parts and mechanisms, and are made in the USA.

and yes, i think they are more comfortable than the Herman Miller Aeron.
